Goodwill® organizations work hard to get the most value from your donations. After a reasonable amount of time on the sales floor, items that are not sold in Goodwill stores are sent to outlet stores, where customers can purchase items by the pound at a much reduced rate. Items not sold in outlet stores are sold to textile recyclers, which gains more value for the donations and keeps items out of landfills. The recyclers will repurpose the items into rags or insulation, for example, which extends the life of already manufactured goods. This is an environmentally sound process – we have seen estimates that textile recyclers divert about 2.5 billion pounds of used clothes from landfills. Last year, Goodwill® alone diverted more than 2.7 billion pounds of donated goods from the landfills.
